You can find learning gaps in your child at home, without a tutor, in about ten minutes. Is my child actually falling behind in maths?
It is far more common than school results suggest. In ASER 2024, India's largest household survey of children's learning, only 33.7% of Std III children could do a basic two-digit subtraction — which means roughly two out of three could not, even though subtraction of this kind appears in the Std II syllabus. By Std V, only 30.7% could do a simple division problem.
The encouraging part: these are the best numbers India has recorded in a decade, and the recovery since the pandemic has been real.

The uncomfortable part is what the averages hide: a class result, or a report-card grade, tells you almost nothing about whether your child is one of the two-in-three or the one-in-three. For that you need evidence from your own child — and it is easy to collect.
What is the ASER check, and why does it work?
ASER is deliberately a floor test. Instead of asking "can this child do Std V work?", it asks "what is the highest basic level this child is fully comfortable at?" — and it uses the same four or five tasks for every child regardless of age:
Arithmetic, in increasing order:
- Recognise numbers from 1–9
- Recognise numbers from 11–99
- A two-digit subtraction with borrowing (e.g. 41 − 17)
- A three-digit-by-one-digit division (e.g. 738 ÷ 6)
Reading, in increasing order: letters → simple words → a short Std I-level paragraph → a Std II-level story.
The child's level is the highest task they can do comfortably — two subtractions correct, not one lucky answer. That design is why a volunteer can run it in minutes, and why it works just as well at your dining table.
How do I run the 10-minute check at home?
Write the tasks on plain paper — no app, no screen, no printout of this page in front of them. Then:
- Start easy and go up. Begin one level below where you think your child is. Early success settles nerves; this must not feel like an exam.
- One task at a time, out loud for reading, worked on paper for maths. No time limit — ASER checks can they, not how fast. (Speed is a separate and less useful signal — see why the fast learner is a myth.)
- Ask for two of each. One correct subtraction can be luck; two is evidence. Use fresh numbers, always with borrowing.
- Stop at the first level that feels hard, and note it. That level — not the grade printed on their textbook — is where practice should start.
- Say nothing about the result. Thank them, move on. The check is for you, not a verdict for them.
For a Std III child comfortable with borrowing, try the division. For a Std V child who hesitates at subtraction, go down to number recognition without embarrassment — ASER surveyors do exactly this every year.
What do the results mean — and what don't they mean?
A stopping point is evidence of a skill gap, not a verdict on your child. Borrowing errors at Std IV usually mean the place-value foundation underneath was never made solid — a fixable practice problem, and a very common one.
Two honest limits. First, ASER tasks are a floor, not a ceiling: a child who sails through division can still have grade-level gaps in fractions or geometry, so a clean result means "foundations are fine", not "nothing to see". Regular graded practice — like reading their completed worksheets properly — is how you see the rest.
Second, and important: this is not a clinical screen. A worksheet check cannot detect dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, or any learning difficulty, and persistent struggle despite steady practice is a reason to talk to your child's teacher and a qualified professional — a paediatrician or an educational psychologist — not to buy more worksheets.
What should I do if I find a gap?
Practise the specific missing skill, on paper, in short sessions — fifteen focused minutes beats an hour of general revision. Start at the level where your child stopped, not at their grade level, and re-check with fresh problems after two or three weeks.
